It is also home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing contest only<br>held when the waves are at least 40 feet high. Waimea shorebreak waves are<br>some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean<br>storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of<br>the ocean's mightiness. This 20 foot high wave is breaking in water only about<br>four feet deep. It has been said that one wave this size if harnessed for energy<br>could provide enough electrical power to light a thousand homes for over an hour.<br>Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent<br>waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother<br>nature.
