It breaks near the beach (Ehukai Beach) in only a few feet of water over a jagged coral reef and rocky bottom. Its heavily cascading wave forms a cylindrical chamber called the 'tube' or the 'barrel'. The aim of surfers here is to ride inside this tubular chamber, sometimes completely disappearing in the curl, and make it out again without 'wiping out'. This is a goal of all surfers at this and many other North Shore breaks. The waves here range from 2-6 feet high in the summer months to waves as large as 20+ feet high during the winter months generated (November-March) from far distant North Pacific Ocean storms. Pipeline sometimes breaks so hard that you can feel the vibrations on the beach thru sand 20 feet deep! There are numerous professional surfing competitors held here each winter including the Pipeline Masters which is the third contest in the Triple Crown of Surfing.
